How to Run an Instagram Giveaway

A giveaway that runs smoothly is planned in this order: pick a prize your actual audience wants, write rules people can follow without asking questions, stay inside Instagram's own promotion guidelines, run the entry period, then pick and announce the winner in the open.

1. Set a clear goal and prize

A prize relevant to your audience gets entries from people who'd actually buy from you later, not just prize-hunters who follow every giveaway account. Decide what "success" means before launch — more followers, more comments on a specific post, more entries into your list — since that decides which entry mechanic to use.

2. Write entry rules people can actually follow

State exactly what counts as an entry (comment, tag a friend, follow), how many winners there are, when entries close, and how the winner will be chosen and notified. Vague rules ('like this post to enter!') create disputes later — specific ones don't.

3. Follow Instagram's own promotion guidelines

Instagram requires giveaways to include a disclaimer that the promotion isn't sponsored, endorsed, or administered by Instagram, and that entrants release Instagram from any related liability. See our guide on Instagram giveaway rules for what else Meta actually requires.

4. Run the entry period

Post the giveaway with its rules attached (in the caption, not just a Story that disappears), and consider a reminder post partway through if the entry window is longer than a few days.

5. Pick and reveal the winner

Import the real comments, apply your duplicate rule, and draw at random rather than by hand — see our guide on picking an Instagram giveaway winner for the full process.

6. Follow up publicly

Announce the winner on the same post or a follow-up post, and confirm once the prize has actually been delivered. That follow-through is what makes people trust your next giveaway.

Common questions

How long should entries stay open?

Long enough for your normal posting cadence to reach your audience at least once or twice — a few days to a week is typical, but there's no fixed rule.

Do I need to require a follow to enter?

It's a common entry mechanic, but not a requirement — some giveaways run on comments or tags alone. Whatever you choose, state it clearly in the rules.
